About Us

Zanzibar Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA) is a Government Institution based in Zanzibar. BPRA was established under Act No. 13 of 2012 in order to replace the functions of The Registrar General’s Office (RGO).
The Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA)  headed by Ms Mariam Mliwa Jecha,this office works under Ministry of Trade and Industrial Development. BPRA Office is responsible for registration activities ranging from registration of commercial/business entities as well as property registrations. All registrations are done under the provision of their respective legislations such as:-

Historically, before 1964 the Zanzibar Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA) was known as Administrator General’s Office established in 1911 under the Act Administrator General’s Decree Cap. 23. After the 1964 revolution, the office had changed its administrative structure and recognized as Register General where as it continued to change due to amendment of various Acts which then in 2013 the Zanzibar Business and Property Registration Agency officially established under Act No. 13 of 2012. It is a semi -autonomous registration Agency

that implement is activities under the supervision of the following Acts: The Secured Transaction on Movable Properties Act No. 4 of 2011; The Zanzibar Industrial Property Act No. 4 of 2008; The Societies Act No. 6 of 1995; The Business Names Registration Decree Cap. 168; The Companies Decree Cap. 153; The Transfer of Properties Decree Cap. 150; The Registration of Documents Decree Cap. 99; Business Entities Registration Act No.12 of 2012; and Zanzibar Business and Property Registration Agency Act No. 13 of 2012.

To become a center of excellence in service delivery focusing in professionalism and integrity.

To standardize and Simplify Business and property Registration and Operations by adopting recognized and modern management practices.

To complete correction of the registration systems and rules governing registration including strengthening the management of the assets of the creative industry.
To develop and strengthen the Secretariat interact and educate the community about the activities of the Office of the Registrar General.
To implement changes in the system of registration
To strengthen the office of the Registrar of births and deaths operationally in the service delivery effectively.

Office of the Registrar General of the Government deals with registration activities in accordance with the laws governing different types of registration. Activities managed by the Office of the Registrar General Government includes registration of Commercial entities, innovative property documents, and the registration different documents concerning with citizens and visitors who do their activities on the Islands of Zanzibar, including marriage and divorce.
